OAKLAND, Calif. -- Road-weary David Phelps finally pitched well away from home. The New York Yankees scored in bunches without the benefit of a home run. And they beat the ALs best team in a place they had not won in more than two years. Indeed, things are turning around fast out west. Phelps tossed two-hit ball into the seventh inning and two relievers were perfect the rest of the way, leading the Yankees past the AL-best Oakland Athletics 7-0 on Friday night for their fourth straight victory. "Its definitely one of the best starts of my career," said Phelps, who struck out four and walked three in 6 2-3 innings. Phelps (2-4) didnt allow a hit until Derek Norris soft single over the head of third baseman Kelly Johnson with one out in the fifth. Jed Lowries double in the seventh was Oaklands only other hit. Dellin Betances recorded four straight outs, and Jose Ramirez pitched a perfect ninth for New York. Jacoby Ellsbury, Mark Teixeira and Brett Gardner each drove in a run as the Yankees built a 3-0 lead against Sonny Gray (6-3) in the first two innings. New York scored four more in the eighth off Jeff Francis. Six different Yankees drove in a run, and New York had 12 hits in all. "Thats the recipe for scoring a lot of runs," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Coming off a three-game sweep at Seattle, the Yankees kept rolling on the road against the AL West. New York is 5-2 on its nine-game trip and is assured of heading home with a winning mark. The Yankees pounded an As team that began Friday leading the majors in run differential by more than double any other team. Oakland had outscored opponents by 130 runs; the next closest club was San Francisco at 59. Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an RBI single during a two-run first inning. Brett Gardner added an RBI single in the third before Gray found his groove. Oaklands young ace retired 13 straight batters, but his teammates never could fluster Phelps -- or New Yorks bullpen. "They were aggressive and once we were able to start making pitches down in the zone I got them out. It was just a little too late," said Gray, who gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Ichiro Suzuki drove in two runs, and Brian McCann and Johnson each hit RBI singles to put the Yankees up 7-0 in the eighth. New York had lost all five of Phelps road starts this season, including his last outing at Kansas City, where he allowed seven runs in 5 2-3 innings. But Phelps pitched a gem in Oakland, a place the Yankees had lost seven in a row. He also snapped a career-high, four-game skid in front of an announced crowd of 36,067 -- the fifth sellout in Oakland this season -- that had the usual strong sprinkling of Yankees fans to make Phelps feel at home. "I was attacking guys," Phelps said. "The last couple starts I was trying to be too fine with my pitches and digging myself in a hole. But tonight, they did a great job scoring early for me and kind of let me settle in a little early." SEATTLE -- Brad Miller thought the ball would stay inside the foul pole. His manager wasnt so sure. Miller came up with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning Saturday and drove Jarrod Parkers 2-1 pitch high down the right-field line. The ball stayed fair for the rookies first grand slam. "It kept curving, but I was hoping," Miller said. "That felt good." The slam was the second of two home runs Miller hit against Oakland, and it gave Seattle a six-run lead. The Athletics mounted a comeback but the Mariners held on for a 7-5 win. "I wasnt sure if that ball was going to stay fair, but Im glad for us it did," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "It was obviously big for us, especially the way they came back." Boston clinched home-field advantage throughout the post-season with Oaklands loss. The AL West champion As will play their playoff opener at home next Friday against AL Central champion Detroit, and AL East winner Boston will start at Fenway Park against the team emerging from the wild-card playoff: Cleveland, Tampa Bay or Texas. The Athletics got a boost when Oaklands Brandon Moss and Alberto Callaspo hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning off Chance Ruffin. Mosss two-run drive was his team-leading 30th. Oaklands comeback try was hurt by many missed chances. The As failed to score after loading the bases with two outs in the sixth and eighth innings, and they were 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position. However, it was clear after the game the Athletics were already turning their thoughts toward the upcoming series against the Tigers, who beat Oakland 3-2 in last years division series. "It was a good matchup last year. Weve had some spirited games with them this year, so it should be an exciting series," As manager Bob Melvin said. "Two pretty well-matched teams, a little different in style. You look at the numbers overall, their pitching numbers and their hitting numbers, and ours and what we do and its a little different, but should be pretty evenly matched." Parker (12-8) gave up seven runs and sevven hits -- including three homers -- in 4 1-3 innings.ddddddddddddIt was the second time in three starts he allowed seven or more runs without making it through the fifth inning. "I think he was just a little off on the baseball today, but the stuff was still good," Melvin said. "Im not worried about that." Justin Smoaks career-best 20th homer, a two-run drive, put Seattle ahead in the second. Smoak became the fourth Mariner this season with 20 homers, the first Mariners quartet since 2007. Miller hit his first homer of the game with a solo shot in the third for a 3-1 lead. Two innings later, the Mariners had three straight singles to lead off the inning and Miller extended the lead with his grand slam. It was the third time this season Miller has hit two homers in a game, with the bulk of his eight homers coming in pairs. The grand slam was Seattles seventh this year, second in the majors behind Bostons nine. Brandon Maurer (5-8) gave up two runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings. He had been 0-1 in three starts and three relief appearances since beating the As on Aug. 20. "I got to throw everything together this last one, work on mound presence and really go out there and trust my stuff," Maurer said. NOTES: Seattle manager Eric Wedge said Saturday his uncertain contract status wasnt the reason he decided not to return next season. "If theyd offered me a 5-year contract, Im not coming back here," he said. Instead, Wedge said the reason behind his departure was a difference of opinion between him and the Mariners front office: CEO Howard Lincoln, president Chuck Armstrong and GM Jack Zduriencik. "My vision of the future and theirs are just different," Wedge said. ... Oakland OF Yoenis Cespedes was out of the lineup a day after leaving in the fourth inning with shoulder stiffness.
